Senator Shaheen supported the provision that will assist Afghan allies stuck overseas.
Congress outlined hundreds of provisions in the omnibus spending bill for 2023. One of these provisions extends the Special Immigrant Visa (SIV) program for Afghan allies through 2024, and also provides 4,000 more visas for Afghani interpreters still left overseas.
After the U.S. withdrawal, 70,000 people received visas, and advocates estimate that there are around 60,000 people left in Afghanistan who helped the American military while they were stationed in the country.
“This is about upholding the vow we made to the brave individuals who risked their lives and the safety of their families for the U.S. mission,” stated Senator Jeanne Shaheen of New Hampshire.
